Awesome route in Carpegna
What an awesome day climbing the Cippo di Carpegna!
We had an early start and set off on the 45km to the start of the climb. The first few minutes of climbing were tough but once we got into our rhythm it became better. Soon we passed the statue to Marco Pantani – and a chance for a photo and some rest – then we continued up the climb.
The second half of the climb was beautiful as we climbed through the pine forest to reach the top. The views from the top were spectacular and we could see out over the Tuscany countryside. Again, another photo stop and a chance to take in the amazing views.
Stefano said that the writing on the road “Il Carpegna mi basta” means “The Carpegna is enough for me” – well it certainly was for me too, Marco.
Apparently he used to use the hill as his training ground in advance of the Giro d’Italia and the hill made him strong.
A great descent down to the cafe at the bottom and a gentle (!) ride back behind Andrea at 45km per hour back to Hotel Dory, bike hotel in Riccione. Stefano, you were right: it really was a fantastic day!
